Yay!! I had a great time last night eating out with everyone in our class. We had a lot to do when we got back to class, but it was all worth it for Carrabba's! Last night my controversial group did our power point on religious controversial. I think we all did a great job. My group wore our lime green t-shirts with our library quote on the front of them. On the back it said, Equal Opportunity Offender. Everyone was impressed. Tina even brought her cheese braid again for everyone to eat. It was a great way to wrap up the class. After we all presented our power points we had to go around and talk about what we did for our Copyright Project. Everyone in the class made a brochure mostly. I really wasn't sure about making a brochure because I felt like I would copying everything that is already given out on Copyright chart from our school website. I actually did all the "grunt work" that my MC usually does for Copyright. She was actually glad to see that I needed to do this, bc that was one of her goals before Thanksgiving break, was to give out the copyright information. She usually just emails all of the materials out to everyone. I also added a quiz for them all to do. Another thing that I did was to enlarge the copyright chart guidelines and post them in the copy room for everyone to see. The last thing that I did was to make an informational poster that explained the color codes for the video collection.
I can't believe this semester is over!

Update
I have everything typed and ready to turn in for my copyright project, but I'm still waiting for a reply back from my media coordinator to email everything out to the school. I am sending an email that has a copyright quiz, copyright chart/ guidelines, and I am also informing them of the large copyright chart that I posted in the copyroom. I hoping this is going to be enough. I thought about sometime up brochure to help out with understanding the video policy better, but everything is pretty explanatory on the chart from the school website. We also have video and music guidelines that teachers must follow before showing videos. I'm sending those guidelines out along with the email. I will hopefully have everything finished for this project by Monday night.

Last Class
Last night we were suppose to present our controversial issue group projects, but it decided to snow in Boone and Dr. Nita couldn't make it down the mountain. We ended up trying to do our class using our microphones. I went to Tina's house because I knew I didn't have a power point program on my computer. It was kind of nice having someone there to help work through on the logistics of setting up the microphone. It took us an hour before we could get anything started. We did get to hear gang topic from one group. They had a really good presenation and you could tell they put a lot of work into it. My group wanted to wait until the next class session because we want to wear our t-shirts that we had made for the presentation. Tina even made cheesebraid...which I got help eat since I was at her house. :)
Today I worked on my copyright project a little while at school. I had a poster made last week from the print out that the librarian sends to everyone about copyright. I just made it much larger and laminated it. Now I just need to get hung up in the copyroom. I am planning on sending out a situational quiz about different copyright issues and then send out all the information that my librarian usually sends out. I am going to try to work on the other parts to this project maybe tonight or tomorrow. I am going to have a quiet night to myself while my husband is off hunting!
Things are wrapping up...I can't believe we're almost finished with our first semester. I can't wait to eat at Carraba's for our last class in 5010!

controversial Project Meeting
Today I met with my group at the Higher Edu. Center to finish up on the final details of our controversial issue project. I feel a little better about this project, but I just hope I don't get up there and mutter through it. I think overall our power point is going to look really good. We've got our t-shirts made, we have a video from YouTube, we have clip art, and many more cool things on the power point. Tina did most of the work with putting the power point together. We helped her figure out what to put, but since we were using her computer she was the one that did most of the typing. If all else fails...we'll look good while presenting with our flashing t-shirts!!
Last Class
Last week I went to class and found out that I had completed the weeding project a week early! I actually was excited about that because I had to go out of town this past weekend. Dr. Nita gave us some time in class to work on any projects that we needed to catch up on. Having that time was great for our group. We were able to continue working on our power point presentation for the controversial project. Shea had actually finished her weeding project early as well, so we were able to help our group more.
This past weekend I went out of town to Asheville for an art conference. I was able to go to many art workshops and I had to help present a workshop using powerpoint. It has been a long time since I've actually presented anything using power point. I think it's a great tool, but it does take time in putting everything together. One good thing about it is once it's made...it's made!!!

Collection Development Action Project
I liked putting this project together because I was able to learn some important things about weeding. During our last class session we had a visitor, Karen Lowe, to come show us how to weed through our collection. She has a chart that she made that shows every area of the Dewey Decimal system. Each section is broken down into the smaller sections..for example the 520s, then the 530s....Then we are to look on the chart at what years books should be discarded and what books should be kept, and what books are useful. This little chart helped us when weeding our own shelf list for our action projects. She also gave us some criteria to determine what should be weeded and criteria for selecting replacements. All of this helpful info was put together in her resource alignment book. I worked on the 520s section for my project. I should be finished with the project tomorrow and ready to turn in!! I can't believe we're almost finished with this semester!!

Critique #4 and Weeding project
Yesterday I was able to complete my last critique. I wanted to find one about copyrighting b/c it looks like our next project is going to be about copyrighting. It was called Digitizing 101. It basically was telling how you should always give ownership to anything that is transferred into an electronic format. Putting older historical documents on an electronic format can make viewing these items much easier...but you always have to remember to find the source or owner of the document before it's formatted into an e-format.
I am just beginning the weeding project. I have a shelf list printed from my librarian at school. I have chosen the 500s section. Or actually the 523s. I emailed Dr. Nita to see if I starting this project correctly! We'll see!

Controversial Project
Tonight I met with my group in the Computer lab at school. We were finally able to come up a brief outline of how we want to put our power point together for our topic. After we decided on an outline we began to look deeper for related articles. Our topic is controversial religious issues in school libraries. We are planning to talk about the history of religious book banning, misrepresenations in religious books, bias views in religious books, and incorrect information in religious books. These three main areas are reasons why religious books get censored. Some examples that we'll use will come from "The Da Vinci Code", "The Golden Compass", "Big Mama Makes the World", and "Hey God, It's Me Magaret". We are going to break up the power point into different sections that we will each take turns talking about for the presentation. We also decided to make a loud statement with wearing matching T-shirts! It's going to look good! We found some video clips on You Tube that will work well in the slide show.
I was really beginning to worry about this project, b/c we all seemed a little confused...but we really got the ball rolling tonight!! And we were able to put together a few slides!!

Work, Work, Work
So far these week I was able to get my critique #3 finished for this class. I am so glad that I got the research critique out of the way last time. Because this selection tools project is requiring a lot of time. I don't mind the selection tool project. I am learning a lot from all of the tools. Today I went to talk to my librarian to see which one that she uses the most to look for reviews and ordering for the school library collection. She uses Follett Library Resources or Titlewave( which is part of Follett). She also mentioned Permabound. I am going to check it out online. She doesn't do any ordering from actual books, everything is online. Most of my tools that I'm working on are online tools. I have found that many of the journals and catalogs have websites that you can pay to use as well. I have a little over half of this project completed. I was hoping to work on it again tonight, but too many other things going on ...so I thought I would write up a quick blog.
For the censorship project, I have been trying to find some articles on ERIC and I am trying to get a book from the ASU library. I'm not sure if I filled the thing out right to get a book. I"ll have to email about that. Our goup is going to try to meet sometime this week to work on our power point. We all don't feel like we are doing enough for this project and I think we're all a little confused still of what to do!! We'll learn as we go I guess!! I can't believe the semester is almost half over!

Overwhelmed
Okay this pressure is on....
So I finished my critique on Sunday night. I went ahead and did my research article for this time around. I figured things are going to get a little more hectic around here.
I did a research article on the study of sex education & the public library. The author researched three libraries and interviewed them with four main questions. Most of the librarians did not see the public library as the place to teach sex education, only a place to find resources and information about sex education. It was quite interesting!
The next thing I've worked on this week is my policy and analysis project. I have pretty much finished, but I haven't looked over it yet. It is due next Tuesday. I'm not sure if I actually accomplished the assignment correctly! We'll see!
I hope to do my readings over the weekend!

Critique #1
Well I have finished writing my critique, now I just need to have my husband edit it, then I'll email it in. It actually took a litttle longer than I thought it would. I am hoping that critiqued the right way. I wanted to say "I" so many times, but she said that wouldn't fill the requirements. The article was a little hard to understand at first. That might be because I feel a litte outdated when it comes to technology. Even though I'm still young, I've never been real savy with technology. The article was about how Wake Forest's Library webpage is being updated with small videos that students can click on if they have "how to questions". I think this project is probably a good resource for the students and saves the reference staff a lot of time. The article just failed to mention in the beginning that the "toolkits" or videos that were made are only "how to videos". When I first started reading it, I was a little unsure of what a tutorial toolkit was. Once I clicked on the YouTube link to view a tutorial, I completely understood. I also read Chapter 4 in our book today. Everything seems to be piling up at once!!

Controversial Group Chat
My group for the Controversial Issue Project includes Tina, Shea, Tiffany and myself. We were able to meet today to talk about our topic that we chose on the first night of class. Our topic is going to be religious issues. Tina came to the group with a lot of great ideas for the project. She had already spoken to the librarian at her school and she came with various book titles that may cause religious controversy in a school library. She made the point that we may not personally like the message these books send to our children about certain religions, but we have to keep an open-mind about keeping certain books in the library.
Some of the book titles that were brought up were, "The Chronicles of Narnia", "The Golden Compass", "Big Momma Makes The World", "Bridge To Terabithia", and "Hey God, It's Me Again, Margaret". We also talked about if a school library contains the Holy Bible, then it would need to also contain the Torah, the book of morons, or the Koran, plus many more. We mentioned that school libraries would need to contain books about all multicultural areas and the way they celebrate their own holidays.
Shea mentioned that no matter what kind of books a library has, someone will always get offended with religious issues and it is a touchy subject for some parents. We all felt that religious issues is probably more of a controversy in this area because of the Bible belt. Tiffany mentioned that however people feel about something, will always start at a young age.
We talked about breaking our topic into 3 different area such as, picture books, non-fiction, and fiction books that relate to religious controversy.
We ended our chat by deciding that we would all continue to do a little more research via the computer, our own librarians, or looking deeper into some of the books mentioned.
